Breaking the fast

oatmeal ideas

I started eating oatmeal every morning when I came back from China. I was over fried foods and making an effort to get on a health kick.

The healthy kick is mostly over but I am still eating oatmeal for breakfast every morning. I am always in such a rush to get it made and get out the door, so I just put blueberries on it, but these pictures from Tastespotting’s Oatmeal Project are motivating me to get creative.

For February’s heart healthy month, they did something different with oatmeal everyday. I don’t think I’m ready for the Nach-oats but I do like the idea of adding in papaya with my blueberries.

I like my oatmeal with brown sugar and whatever I have laying around. I can only eat it for so many weeks without developing a taste aversion, though.

Whoa, I would have never thought to add black beans, tomatoes, etc… Might have to work my way up to that. I only recently figured out to make my own oatmeal (as in on the stove top). And I am 26 years old – shamefull! Anyway, I add cinnamon and vanilla to mine.

I just barely learned over Christmas at my in-laws. My oatmeal conversion is very new! I didn’t grow up with it all all.

I’ll have to try the cinnamon and vanilla. I have been straying from adding sugar because I feel like I’m “canceling out” the goodness if I just douse it with sugar… so cinnamon and vanilla are good options!

I thought that top pictures was brown rice with all those goodies added on top. That would be a delicious, healthy meal!

    • Natalie says:

Maybe with steel cut oats? Or quinoa? That might work as a late-night dinner — very filling! Or lunch.

  4. I’ve never really liked oatmeal…it’s kind of hard for me to get down and then I don’t end up eating very much of it. I love Cream of Wheat, on the other hand.

Like Nicole, I thought the first picture was brown rice too!

Have you ever had quinoa? It’s ind of like the Bolivian version of oatmeal and it is really good. Just an idea if you’re looking for another way to add variety to your mornings.

Hmm, could I eat it for dinner? I’m looking for a way to add more whole grains to my evening meals. And I realize this shouldn’t include tortilla chips made with whole grains.

    Love blueberries!

  8. I’ll take oatmeal in almost any form I can get it (but maybe no to the nach-oats, ew!). It’s a bummer though since my husband cannot stand the stuff so we don’t have it around as much as I’d like.

Oatmeal is the one food i cannot stand above all other foods on this planet. Seriously. I will try most things- including escargot, octopus, and horse testicle. But I cannot stomach one bite of oatmeal without it coming right back out. Isn’t that funny? Such an innocent food :) But it is very healthy, so I’m glad you like it. I have to stick to my breakfast rice cakes over here :)

I’m leaving for a race (12K) this morning and eating a little oatmeal with half a banana mashed in it and a few tablespoons of almond butter. It gives me protein, light sugar, potassium and more.
Oh and I use steal cut oats. You put them in a pan with boiling water the night before to lower the cooking time in the morning.

  11. Danielle says:

YUM! I’m totally going to try a few of these :)
