Color Blocked

color blocking

One final tonight and then I am done with summer school. And tomorrow is another big, BIG day in my life, one that I shall blog about soon and I’m still trying to think of the right words. I’m really excited for it though.

The hair was a little dirty today and taking photos was proving to be impossible, so I sat down in the chair before I left for work and took the self-timer superfast. I don’t take usually take outfit photos everyday  but I committed to the 21 Day Challenge and gave my mom a color blocking how-to lecture, so I couldn’t not snap a picture! I think this was my best color blocking venture.

Learn one thing from me: When I commit, I commit. It’s very hard for me to abandon a promise that I’ve made.

In honor of dirty hair, I’m posting this lovely fact from the Harvard Business Review, found via Corporette, one of my favorite career-related blogs.

For women, an increase in personal grooming time is associated with lower earnings; for example, if a nonminority woman doubles her daily grooming from 45 minutes to 90 minutes, her earnings drop an average of 3.4%, say Jayoti Das and Stephen B. De Loach of Elon University. Men differ significantly by race: Grooming has no effect on nonminority men’s earnings, but for minority men, a doubling of daily grooming from 40 minutes to 80 minutes yields a nearly 4% increase in average earnings. The researchers say grooming signals social identity, and while it has adverse consequences for highly groomed women, it may counter negative stereotypes of minority men.

So next time you rush out the door, just tell yourself that you’re preparing for a raise. Even though the percentages are so teensy tiny, you might want to take a few minutes to brush your hair for peace of mind.

I put together red and mint because my friend Brooke said it was inspiring her lately, and she inspires me. Next time I do red and mint, I’m doing it better. Something like this.

Your color blocking rocks. Go you!

  2. Nice color blocking. The contrast of the bright and the pastel is visually interesting, and it lets you do red and green without looking Christmas-y.

I hope people follow your advice about pinning. It drives me crazy when I click through and can’t find the original post. Usually there’s no way to search the blog effectively, since all you have is an image to go on.

Fascinating stat about grooming–seems to counter a lot of conventional wisdom.

THAT is why is hate to spend/do my hair for more than 30 seconds a day….you have given me an answer to a question i have been asking myself FOREVER…i wanna make more money! lol. your blocking is the best…i can’t believe mint green is back “in style” it was one of my fav colors in jr. high….

  4. Em says:

Wow — that makes me feel much better because I seriously blow dry my hair, five minute face and out the door…it’s because I am successful, not un-stylish — hahahah!

  5. Jenn B says:

I love that outfit! I need a good skinny belt…

  6. I love this outfit on you! It might be my favorite ever, actually.

I’m going to share that excerpt with my roommate. She’s always harassing me about putting on makeup before I leave the apt., and I’m all, “Listen honey, I’m about to go sit in a medical school lecture hall for 8 hours. I’m not doing a smoky eye for that.” You have proved my theory right (for now…I always wear makeup when I see patients, because I don’t want them to think that I’m 12!) :)

  7. Miss Nemesis says:

Hah! Am wearing the same Ann Taylor shirt (but in purple) today for my blocking challenge. You look great!

  8. LatteLove says:

i like the red/mint combo – that inspiration picture is…inspiring!

  9. Kim says:

color blocking question. I have a purple maxi dress that I would like to pair with a top, what color top would you pair with it? I have tons of bright shirts any where from blues, pinks, and citrusy colors. I’m stumped on this one.

  10. Elaine Kao says:

I love this outfit on you! I saw something similar in a magazine and have been meaning to try this combination out! I love the mix of warm and cool colors!

  12. Never thought to pair red and mint together. I love it!

  13. Ali says:

Mint is not a color I would usually choose – I don’t know how to pair it. You’ve changed my mind! Also, those polka dots are awesome.

  14. Meredith says:

Cute! I hope you get to leave after K posts nexts weeks prompts!! Otherwise that would be pretty hard to predict what to bring! Dressing out of a suitcase frustrates me. I always want to wear the one thing I didn’t bring.

  15. peggy says:

We match today! You look great! And I love the red/mint pics you found. Haha, that is so funny about the hair – I think I won’t wash mine tomorrow!

  16. Lydia says:

I really like this outfit. Very clean and attractive.

  17. Anna says:

Isn’t that study crazy about earnings and the amount of time you spend getting ready! I was amazed by it!

  18. I want to hear your big news girl! Congrats on finishing summer school by the way!!!! How exciting!!! I’m not done until next weekend :p

  19. becky says:

That study is fascinating. Love your combo – looking forward to your help with my dressing for the next few days :) .

  20. Loving this outfit. FYE, I read your study as “earrings” instead of “earnings” and was sooo confused. I struggle.
