Ocean blue

By · Oct 05 2011

San Diegans, get yourselves down to the ocean tonight. The coolest thing is happening along the coast. The ocean is glowing blue.

After hearing how amazing it was, we drove to Torrey Pines last night. At 10 p.m. the beach was unusually packed. Then a wave broke and we could see why.

It looked like someone threw glow sticks into the water.

Apparently the water is full of algae that looks red during the day — known as red tide — and it glows at night when the water is moved, like during a wave. You can read more on the scientific stuff here. I don’t know much about it, I just know that it was very cool.

My pictures didn’t turn out — I can’t hold still that long and I didn’t have a tripod. You can still kind of see the blue glow though.

Some things are definitely best experienced in person anyway.

I can’t believe we haven’t been down to see this!!! I saw it years ago when Red Tide came through San Diego, but that was long before I had kids…I know they would LOVE it!!
