A year in review

By · Dec 28 2011

I write this post every year. It is fun to look back. This year was an interesting one. It’s kind of insane to think that when the year started, I didn’t think I would finish grad school until July 2012. I thought 2011 would be a year of no change. Oh, how wrong I was. Everything has changed this year.

January: I went to China. It was such an amazing trip. Best part of my MBA for sure. Loved the adventure, loved solidifying friendships that I hope to have forever. Such a carefree time and I loved it.

Then I came back and life fell apart. February to June is really a blur of barely living. I know saying that makes me vulnerable — but have you seen this TED talk? It isn’t a bad thing and I wish there was more vulnerability in this world, so I’m starting with me.

Since I didn’t want to talk about life, I started taking pictures of my outfits. It was fun. Oh, and I went to Chicago with my bestie Brooke. Highlight. And I was the assistant camp director for Young Women’s camp too.

July: I started making some life choices that helped turn the frown upside down. I decided to quit my job of three years to ease some stress. Husband and I went to Palm Springs for our fourth wedding anniversary.

August: The highlight was spending a week in Utah after leaving my job. So nice.

September: I started full-time student life. I studied on the beach. It was delicious. But then I accepted the position at KSL and prepped to work and go to school full time. I highly underestimated how stressful this would be. I’m so glad it is over.

October: I went to Utah for a week. It was great to “preview” the position I accepted before I moved and make sure it was a fit. Everyone was so nice — and it blew me away. I came home and started the two most stressful months ever. Oh, and I was selected by my professor to speak at V2. Scary but awesome. I rocked it.

November: I presented at BlogWorld – scary but awesome. We went to Disneyland. Way fun. My family came for Thanksgiving. We started packing and saying goodbye to America’s Finest City.

December: I said goodbye to friends. I cried a lot. I told my therapist that I was going to need therapy for saying goodbye to my therapist. I finished grad school. We moved. I started working in Salt Lake City. It’s a giant blur but a good blur. It’s been a bit out of control.

ladies goodbye party
I’m hoping that 2012 is the year of no change that we thought 2011 would be. The husband can take (and pass!) the bar exam. We want to buy a house and get settled. So there will be change. But as for kids or any other additions to our family — I am hoping to wait at least another year. We’ll see though right? Life has a funny way of laughing at your plans.

It has been quite a year, hasn’t it! I’ve been toying with the idea of doing a year in review on my blog, but I don’t want to overwhelm myself :)
I’ve enjoyed reading your blog, even though I’m pretty jealous that you’re moving back to Utah. I’ve only been away for four months and I miss it like crazy. Who woulda thought?!
(PS if, off the top of your head, you know a good company to buy affordable dresses from, I’d love a suggestion or two!)

Yes. Eshakti is very affordable and they customize the dresses to your measurement for $8. Totally worth it. I love the Ann Taylor Loft clearance rack — and Banana Republic’s clearance rack too. Or their outlet stores. I actually find good things at Target too.

Those aren’t too original — but it’s amazing what a little bit of accessorizing can do. Throw on a fur vest on a black dress and it’s something different. Or neon – I love neon accessories on plain clothes.

I would stray from Shabby Apple… they’ve gone down hill. Everything I’ve ordered has been so bad.

Thank you! I appreciate you getting back to me :)

I hadn’t thought of the Banana Republic & Ann Taylor Loft clearance racks. Probably because I prefer to shop online. Haha

You did have a crazy year! What a recap. :) I hope 2012 is even more awesome, even if doesn’t have that much change in it.

You know, sometimes at the end of a stressful year, it’s just good to say “congratulations on surviving!” Excited for the good and the exciting that came your way this year, and grateful for the (hopeful) end of all things bad – but not all things challenging, because then where would the growth be? :)

    2012. Here’s to a good year.

    umm. a couple things.

    1. You really let me go on a wagon ride… and I was that pregnant? What was I thinking?

    2. It isn’t life that has a funny way of laughing at your plans. It’s Utah. Just kidding. Kind of.

    3. Just remember how lucky you are. You have family and friends who love and support you.

    Here’s to a great start to 2012!

I was so terrified that you were going to go into labor. But you were all “don’t stop me just because I’m pregnant” and my grandpa was totally oblivious to how bumpy it was. Thank goodness Olivia decided to wait! For several reasons — if you’d gone into labor, I would not have found that pink jacket or the torquoise skirt!

I read this post and immediately let out a deep, refreshing sigh. In just a few words you always inspire me. I loved the part about vulnerability. There are things I have written over and over and never published because I am absolutely terrified (seriously, paralyzed with fear) of being vulnerable.
I need to watch the rest of that TED talk. Sounds wonderful.

P.S. How come you’ve been here a couple weeks and we still haven’t gotten together? Let’s fix that soon. (You know. With all of that free time that both of us have? heh.)
