Party food

savory party food

The best part about planning a party is creating the menu. I love figuring out what is going to go together — and what can be done in time for the party.

I got back from my Utah trip on Thursday. The party was on Friday, so I immediately prepped a grocery list and we hit up Costco, Party City and Vons.

On Friday I woke up and started prepping and baking.

On the menu for actual food was lemon tarragon chicken salad sandwiches, a small cheese plate and savory watermelon.

This was my take on the Watermelon Chili Sliders that are posted over and over on Pinterest.

I couldn’t find alpepper or white balsamic at my local grocery store. And I was running a little bit late. So my process was this:

1. Created the watermelon cubes

2. Drizzle with olive oil and lime juice

3. Drizzle with regular balsamic (the recipe has you cut half-moon shapes into the cubes of watermelon and fill with vinegar).

4. Slice serrano peppers and stick into watermelon cubes.

Honestly, the watermelon was already quite flavorful at this point that I didn’t worry about adding salt and pepper.

For dessert, cupcakes were the main event. I made husband’s favorite — banana chocolate cupcakes.

I made rice krispie treats (recipe from the box) and dipped them in chocolate. Because the cupcakes and rice krispies already had chocolate in them, I made Martha Stewart’s lime meltaways and topped them with a sugar glaze and blueberries (instead of smothering them in powdered sugar).

The meltaways were a sad story — I pulled the second batch out of the oven and tripped. The warm cookies went flying and splattered all over the floor. Sad!

I arrived to Balboa Park about 90 minutes early so I could start to prep. I was terrified of making everyone sick because the chicken salad had mayonaise in it. So I spread out ice in a shady area and did my best to keep it cold. It never reached room temperature, so I think it was OK. No one got sick so I’m calling it a win.

I learned a lot from the last party I hosted in the park. I brought plenty of garbage bags and hid all debris away from the actual celebration so nothing looked cluttered. I minimized the stuff I brought and used throw-away decor so that it was easy to clean up. We were out of the part in just a few minutes and home by 8:45. Our friends helped, but no one had to carry more than one bag of stuff.

When I arrived to the park and started unloading food I was immediately stalked by squirrels. I was so worried about them getting into the food I was trying to keep cold that I transitioned the watermelon from the 9×13 pan that I transported them in to a serving tray and then gave the squirrels the pan.

They licked it clean! And the little critters stayed away from the real food. Thank goodness.

Next time I throw a party I’m going focus a little more on table decor, since I think the table looks a little bare. But bottom line, it was a great time and that is what matters more.

Party at the park

Balboa park San Diego party

I love a good party and we did just that to celebrate the husband’s birthday on Friday. The theme was “Croquet and Cupcakes” and as a consequence we ate cupcakes and played croquet. Shocker, right?

When else do you get an excuse to play croquet? We all kept saying “we used to play this as a kid!” It was certainly fun to put our set to good use.

We have great friends in San Diego. I have said it before, I feel like I can’t say it enough. We are so blessed to have such fantastic friends.

I love throwing a party at the Balboa Park. We have so many great memories there. I was a lot more prepared to transport everything this time than I was for our last mobile event. Mostly I learned to relax! If you are curious, I’ll post recipes and such tomorrow.

This game got serious. Can you tell?

We had prizes that were passed out in the near dark. The winner got Whoppers, the loser got Milk Duds, and then we had various awards for character. The classiest player took home a Symphony bar and the rule-follower took home a Nerds box. The Sour Patch Kids went to my friend Elaine who sat out of the game with her boyfriend so we could catch up.

Late last night

Posted by: | Aug 17 2011 | Comments (12)

It was a late night studying and the only thing I could think about was how my peaches were slowly going bad in the fridge. I had neglected them, when all I was trying to do was savor each one and make them last.

So at 10 p.m. I started chopping and slicing. I added blueberries for good measure. I stirred with some sugar and flour. I baked until I was studying to an amazing scent.

Then I added some sugary sweetness and baked some more. I pulled heaven out of the oven. It isn’t the prettiest thing out there, but I tell you, it is one of the best things ever. Only improved by vanilla ice cream, which I totally debated on getting at 11 p.m. but ended up deciding that I was going to save calories by not partaking.

With that, I was ready to really buckle down and focus on my final. Doesn’t this look like fun? Summer school, it is for the cool kids!

The formal recipe is on Epicurious, and it is for all sorts of berries. But I just upped the peach quantity. I also added nutmeg and cloves, because it just makes everything better.

Peach Crisp

Ingredients

4 large peaches, peeled, pitted, chopped (about 2 1/2 cups)
1 1/3 cups blueberries (about 6 ounces)
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons plus 3/4 cup all purpose flour

1/2 cup (packed) light brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon salt
Dash of nutmeg
Dash of cloves
5 tablespoons unsalted butter

Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter 8x8x2 1/2-inch square baking dish. Toss fruit, sugar and 2 tablespoons flour in large bowl to combine. Transfer to prepared baking dish. Bake fruit until juices bubble, stirring occasionally, about 30 minutes. Bake without stirring another 5 minutes. Remove from oven. Increase oven temperature to 400°F.
Meanwhile, whisk remaining 3/4 cup flour, sugar, cinnamon, ginger and salt in medium bowl to blend. Add butter and rub in with fingertips until small moist clumps form. Sprinkle topping evenly over hot fruit in dish.
Bake crisp until topping is golden brown, about 20 minutes. Cool slightly. Serve warm with ice cream.

Oh, and here’s the finished product! With a slice missing of course. See those blueberry corners? The best part.

Please don’t shop at Target next month

I can’t get over the Missoni for Target images. Please stay away so there will be plenty for me. Or I will just make sure I am there bright and early on September 13.

The lovely Margherita Missoni is in the ads.

I love the bright colors. It just seems like a classy way to add brightness to a room or an ensemble.

What do you think? Are you going to be venturing into Target to see what you can see? If so, I’m seriously thinking of brunching at Mission Valley Mall to be ready to go in when the store opens. Are you in?

P.S. While you aren’t shopping at Target, you can enter my giveaway for a $100 in beautiful mineral make-up by Mary Kay. Enter here!

Pretty much necessary

aqua-notes-home
Aqua notes are a waterproof pads so you can take notes in the shower.

I’ve composed some of the world’s greatest songs in the shower. I forget them the minute I step out. If I get these, I could likely leave work and school  and just become a millionaire on my amazing shower songwriting abilities.

It’s very likely. At least 5 percent.

Or… they would be cute to leave love notes and such on. A pack is $6.99 and it comes with a pencil that suction cups to the wall. Genius.
