The Missoni for Target craziness

This day has been on my calendar for months. I got to Target this morning at 7:30 a.m., grabbed a cart and the adrenalin definitely got pumping. I met up with Kinzie and we explored together.

We hit the clothes first — and we were fast! — but by the time we got to the second floor, there was no housewares left. 20110913-023941.jpgSomeone handed me a stack of six cups as if it was a total treasure. I didn’t need the cups so when I checked out, I asked the girl in front of me if she wanted them. It was early, and most of the people were there for Missoni stuff.

Get this – she wasn’t. She had no idea. But she could tell they were a hot item – so she bought them anyway. She was only there for Tylenol and a bottle of water. The cups increased her purchase by about $50.

Where we really scored was by the stockroom. They were grabbing the stuff in the back and taking it out to the store. As stuff rolled by, we would grab it, if we wanted it. It wasn’t as bad as it sounds — I really wanted a blanket, more than anything else, and the nice employee took us back there so we could get them. The carts rolling past us with extra stuff was just a bonus.

I’ll be honest. I was one of those crazy people who just grabbed one of everything in my size and sorted it out at check-out. I am going to have to return some things, and I feel bad because a lot of people wanted them, but in my defense, a lot of the items I bought didn’t have price tags on them because they were restock items.

But because of that, I wouldn’t be so worried if your Target seems out of the stuff. Just got at the open of business another day, when they’ve set the store back up. The Mission Valley store thought they would get more next week. They didn’t get any office supplies with their first shipment either.

As for the quality? The clothing is all synthetic and I think the prices are too high. I will have to hand-wash both of my cardigans. I love them for the design, not because they are so-called designer. Because let’s be honest, they are Target, not designer quality.

I liked the dresses but they were too short for me.

As for the rest – this is my haul. The prices were a little high, so I think I’ll be taking back the umbrella, tote and towels. I put them on eBay for a little bit less than some of the crazy prices that people are charging.

I really like the clutch, but I think I could part with it. I think.

Not pictured: a tie that husband requested I get. When I saw that this picture didn’t have it, I nearly had a heart attack, checked my receipt, and then checked the car. It was still there. Thank goodness.

I need to see what husband thinks of the comforter. I had no plans of getting a new bedding set! But husband and I have talked about it for awhile, and this comforter has the same colors as both our walls and the carpet. So I’m calling it fate. And the blanket matches it really well. So I am hoping that husband likes it. Our current bedspread is an heirloom handmade by my grandma and I worry it is getting ruined.

Target did a great job with this collection. They advertised it profusely, they created buzz, and the products are definitely for Target customers, not necessarily people who want to buy designer. Missoni wins too. Their brand awareness just jumped several degrees. And I win. Look a that couch. Oh goodness gracious.

P.S. If you didn’t luck out on Missoni, you can still luck out in my giveaway for a Shabby Apple dress!

Dark purple

dark hair for fall

It’s official. I’m a brunette. I wanted a deep, rich color. Thanks to the lovely Melinda, that’s what I got. It’s shocking when I look in the mirror — but several people have told me that it looks so much better than what I had before, making me think “what was I doing posting horrible pictures of myself on the Internet?

Live and learn, live and learn. I like playing with the dark hair now though. Perfect for the colder temps that are sure to hit us eventually.
By cold temps, I mean 60-degrees.

I headed to Balboa Park to take these pictures. I love this part of the park. It is an international village with each house representing a different country.

I woke up and wanted to wear my new purple pencil skirt that I picked up on clearance. I thought I’d go for a bit of monochrome action, because, why ever not?

How do we feel about the dress?

Posted by: | Sep 07 2011 | Comments (7)

There are so many things about this look I love. If I saw this dress on the rack though, I don’t think I would pick it up.

British actress Keira Knightley
But the more I look at it on Keira Knightley, I love the way it accentuates her shape. My verdict is that I love it. I just do. I can hear Joan Rivers squelching about the patterns, but it feels very “escape to Europe” to me.

She wore the dress at the 68th Venice Film Festival on Sept. 2. From the looks of the dresses, it is an event to take chances instead of play it safe. Makes you wish you had such an event to go to on your calendar, doesn’t it?

It’s not all about you

how to stop caring what people think

This is silly, but for years after seeing The Truman Show, I was convinced that I was in my own show. People were secretly taping me. I was a star. I used to act a certain way because it was a sweet gig and I certainly didn’t want to lose it.

Then I had this realization. No one cares that much about my life. Only I care that much. It is all up to me.

After I got over the pain and sorrow of realizing I couldn’t strike it rich by suing a production company for profiting from my winning personality, I realized it was a good thing.

It set me on a path to realize that no one cares.

When celebs in their 40s are interviewed, it seems that they always talk about how they wish they had come to the realization that it doesn’t matter what people think sooner. Jen Aniston said just that in Glamour this month (yes I subscribe, and yes it probably makes me shallow and whatever, but you know what? Isn’t the whole point of this to realize that I don’t care what you think?).

I’m not in my 40s. But I decided that I’m going to do my darndest to not wait until then to figure it out. I’m giving up that stress. Worrying about what other people think is a process that leads to no where. After all, I am the master of my fate, no one else.

Do you have any tips on how you have rid yourself of the pressure? I’d love to hear it.

My strategy thus far has been to shrug it off when I start fretting. Just shrug it off. The more I do it, the easier it becomes.

Husband and I went out on Monday and completely gorged ourselves at Olive Garden. We had gift cards so it was all on grandma (thank you!). Funny because my friends and I were discussing on Sunday how horrible the food was. But that just made me crave it more. Horribly delicious, really. I think I ate eight bread sticks. By the time my entree came, I wasn’t hungry and I had to take it home.

Guilty

hair

Have you ever ditched a work out because your hair is clean?

I have. Totally guilty. It is a timing thing — you have to work out around the hair washes, right?

Apparently Surgeon General Dr. Regina M. Benjamin is worried about this.

Oftentimes you get women saying, ‘I can’t exercise today because I don’t want to sweat my hair back or get my hair wet. When you’re starting to exercise, you look for reasons not to, and sometimes the hair is one of those reasons.

At the Bronner Bros. International Hair Show in August, Benjamin talked about removing the barriers to exercise.

My favorite thing is that Dr. Benjamin gets it. She said that many women — particularly black women, like herself — put a lot of money into their hair. As a consequence, women aren’t motivated to wreck the ‘do.

I get it. We need to remove the barriers to working out to prevent obesity. I have barriers like “laziness” and “no time” but then I think of women like Michelle O. and Dr. Benjamin or my girl crushes and I don’t think my “no time” excuse would hold a candle to their lives.

On that note, I am getting my hair done on Friday. Any ideas? I’m thinking of going dark for the winter.
