Right back at you

Posted by: | Jun 30 2011 | Comments (10)

I went to the San Diego Social Media Club’s first get together last week at the Hotel Se’. It is a beautiful, swanky hotel in the middle of downtown. We were at the poolside bar, which is on the fourth floor, so you feel right in the middle of it all.

It was great to see people and make new friends too. I can’t believe I’ve been going to events like this for over three years. The Twitter community in San Diego is so important to me. They are my network and so smart.

My friend Jen and I go to a lot of these events together because she lives more east of me, so she basically has to drive by my house to get there.

But when this picture showed up on Facebook over the weekend, I was all “well, now I know what Jen really thinks of me!’”

I teased her a lot. But a day later, someone posted this picture. And I had to eat crow. I look so judgey judgey.

Ah, the power of social media and tagging photos. Makes me almost a little worried for BlogHer and who knows what else.

Blooming where you are planted

office flowers

There’s a woman I pass often in the elevator at work. She works on a different floor, I don’t know her name. But whenever I pass her on Mondays, she always has flowers.

Just a store bought bouquet, but always a little variety.

Usually, office flowers are reserved as a place for husbands and boyfriends to show their love. And a dear friend sent me a bouquet when the madness that inspired this post’s deep thoughts were occurring.

It also occurred to me that I love flowers. I often pick up a bouquet at the grocery store if I am especially happy or sad. I dream of being in a luxe world where farmers market flowers are a weekly routine and my home is dotted with vases full of blooms. Sidenote: In this dream I also have a subscription to the New Yorker, have a large bay window with a view and sip hot chocolate in the morning. I’m in my 30s and by then I have everything figured out. Please say it is so.

So, as I dream of this “legendary life in the sky” I thought, why isn’t it right now? How hard would it be to pick up a bouquet when I shop and bring it into work? How sunny would a random Tuesday be if I arrived at my desk and fresh lilies greeted me? The pressure of keeping a plant alive would be off. Flowers die. You move on.

I once thought about getting a goldfish for my office but decided against it because of long weekends and the smell. Now I’m thinking a vase with blooms would be just the trick. Why wait for that great day to happen when blooms are all around? Why not make that day tomorrow? Would you think it was weird if your coworker brought in flowers each week?

I say, instead of waiting for life to happen, let’s take it by the shoulders and make it happen.

P.S. I stayed up way too late last night figuring out how to install the BlogHer “Tune-in Bar.” I like BlogHer, and I like how it combines ads with a sharing feature – but what do you think? Too branded or is it OK? I wasn’t going to install it but then I saw it on Reagan’s blog and thought “oh, that looks just fine.”

Cute but not corporate

I wore this to work and I don’t think I look like “little miss corporate” here as much as I look cute. I need to watch that. The excessive matchy matchy and tights did me in I think. Sky-high stilettos and a blazer suit me better at the office.

By the way, this is what I wear to work on a Friday. Anyone who gets to wear jeans? I’m totally “peanut butter and jeally” at you, to quote Taylor from RHOBH.

These are the only wedges I own. I fear looking like I am from Utah, and wedges are very popular there. So no wedges for me, except for about once a year when I pull these out.

I’m completely undecided on Pinterest. On one hand, there are some fun things to be found. But on the other, it perpetuates the whole “there are no original ideas” and people just repin the same images and looks over and over. It also doesn’t give much credit to the photographers or creators of original work. And I hate how unsearchable it is.

But, it can be fun. And while I was browsing around during my accounting class I kept seeing mustard and teal combos. I wanted to replicate so I used some items in my closet. Hey, if Pinterest can save my desire to go shopping all of the time, as I self-medicate with clothes and spending money, then my credit card statement will love it. No pressure.

I just need to stop surfing the Internet during accounting!

Confession: when my director told me that I looked nice and asked what the occasion was, I told him I wanted to wear teal and yellow together. How’s that for embarrassingly honest? Don’t do that. It’s OK to lie in those situations, I think.

I love this kid

This made me smile. A 5-year old who won’t marry a man unless he has a job — and she has one too. She knows what she wants. Watch out world. Though maybe she hasn’t had enough carefree, play with Barbie days in her life? Though is Barbie’s influence even a good thing? Dear analytical brain, please turn off and just enjoy the video.

P.S. Did you enter the giveaway yet for a $50 CSN giftcard? If you follow/subscribe to The Bobby Pin – go ahead and enter again. Thanks for reading my ramblings.

Sustainable style and an invite to a trunk show

Posted by: | Feb 22 2011 | Comments (9)

sustainable fashion

I haven’t given much thought to sustainable fashion — but I had never given much though to baby goats dying for the sake of goat cheese until Penelope Trunk blogged about it (and now it is all I can think of) — so apparently there are a lot of things I haven’t thought about. Apparently, clothes-making is all about the pollutants. Sometimes I just want to climb in a box and not realize what we are doing to our planet.

Enter Jessica Althoff, the founder of Future:Standard and a graduate of the same program I am in at the University of San Diego. She’s aligning her passions by launching a sustainable fashion site.

She’s also having a trunk show on Thursday and we’re all invited. I’m excited to check things out.

And why I am so excited? Aligning passions is my buzz word and what I am all about career-wise right now, so I can’t tell you how excited I am to see a gal doing it who just spent some serious time doing the same thing I’m doing. We call that validation, folks.

Fashion wise, I like Future:Standard because it is a compilation of designers and eco-friendly companies, so instead of having to shop around, Jessica has compiled everything together. I like convenience.

This cozy cardigan is by PI Organic, and looks like something I would wear every single day, $154

The necklace in the top image is made by Lena Bernard, $150

Now. I think buying sustainable clothing is speaking with your wallet. It is on the pricey end, usually. (Or maybe I’m just a frugal girl.) But I think we are paying for some of the mistakes we’ve made for convenience, ala the simple idea of plastic bags instead of bringing our own, with pollution and garbage dumps everywhere. So while I might not be able to replace my wardrobe with all locally made, I think it is something I’m going to take into account.

I think making sure to take your clothing to a thrift store, or buying secondhand, and always using a full load of clothes in the washing machine helps, too.
