The best burger I have ever had
Posted by: | CommentsI would never steer you wrong when it came to a good burger.
And I have to tell you about Stacked. Because honestly? I was in burger heaven. We’ve deemed it the best burger in San Diego. And we’ve tried a lot of burgers.
You order on an iPad and can create a custom salad, pizza, burger, hot dog — really anything! I highly recommend the Stack and Bleu burger. It was amazing. I made out with that burger.
I tried to make it a little more healthy by switching the bun to whole wheat and adding lettuce. I didn’t take out the fried onions or bacon though. Are you crazy?
Husband got the Wake Up Call burger. I didn’t try his because I don’t think eggs belong on burgers, but he said mine was better anyway. I only gave him two bites.
Flatts Fest-ing
Posted by: | CommentsI finally, finally got to see Rascal Flatts in concert on Sunday. I’ve been a fan for so long but it never worked out to go to a concert. This time I said “forget it, I’m going!” and I’m so happy that my pal Star came with me. Best spontaneous decision ever.
We were not alone in our riding boots and button-up outfits, though I care to mention that we were in jeans and not janties — jeans that are so short they resemble underthings. There were plenty of those. We kept it classy.

Music really makes you feel connected to points in your life. Listening to the concert brought back memories of victorious moments — and moments of failure and recovery.
I kept thinking about my second year of college — probably the most challenging. One winter night after busing tables at Hamilton’s Steak House in Logan, I grabbed my tip money and drove straight to Wal-mart at 1 a.m. to buy their new album so I could listen to “Bless the Broken Road” on repeat for three weeks straight. I actually ended up liking “Stand” from that album best — deciding that love would come and go, but my actions after trials mattered most.
The Flatts men wore black and white — including pants that were half black, half white. It was very boy band-ish.
This concert was particularly awesome because Sara Evans opened for them. I love Sara Evans.
Dear Sara, I want to know your skincare and exercise routine. She’s 40 and certainly doesn’t look it. Her face is wrinkle-free and her body is rocking. She’s just as youthful as ever.
She sang Natasha Bedingfield’s part in Easy — and I think she may have done a better job. I’m pretty tone deaf, so I can’t tell you for sure.
Oh, and there was a giant funnel cake involved in the attending of the concert. Divine. Clearly I am not on my way to achieving Sara’s physique.
A special Thanks to KSON for upgrading our tickets! Always stop by the radio station booth on your way into the concert. I’ve been upgraded twice now — from cheap seats to better ones. Always great to try it!
Power out
Posted by: | CommentsIt is like the East Coast and West Coast are dueling for “weirdest events” of the year. Hurricanes, rainstorms, earthquakes, blackouts. But I think the other coast is winning — the blackout was all drama and no harm.*
To think, how did we live without this utility less than 100 years ago?
When the lights switched off, I was at home blogging — getting some giveaway posts ready for the next few weeks (hint, hint). I looked at Dahlia, and said “let’s go to the park!”
I tweeted it too. I jumped in my car, thinking it was just my street and we needed to get out of the house anyway. I was greeted with a traffic mess. The radio was just fuzz. I checked Twitter and it hit me slowly that this was a bit bigger than a blown fuse. It took way too long to get to Lake Murray.
Phone service didn’t work so we just sat at the park and watched the puppy. It was peaceful. I did get an email from USD that my class was canceled. Sweet.
We paid $6 for two ice cream treats and a bottle of water — the concession dude at the park was stoked to be selling more than just fishing bait. Did I mention it was 100 degrees? Super hotness.
Dahlia appreciated the time at the lake. The husband’s office shut down so he came to join us.
When we got home, our neighbors were breaking out the grill, so we grilled peaches and chicken and made some mashed potatoes (there were from a thawed out dream dinner). We ate way better than we would have — especially if I had class.
To top it off, we jumped into our friend’s pool and swam in the moonlight. We talked deep talk about the existence of power. If the world has been around for thousands of years – how did we become so dependent on power in just the last 100. Do you think they ever had electricity anywhere? These are the things we pondered before sliding into our beds at 10:30.
It was so nice to have an electronic-free night, as I was falling asleep, I told husband “thanks for spending time with me tonight.”
Then bam, we woke up at 3 a.m. and the power was back. I still haven’t gone through and fixed all of the clocks. Meh, we’ll figure it out.
Also? I discovered that I can charge my iPhone via my laptop — even if my laptop isn’t plugged in. It was a victory moment because we needed to set an alarm and there was no power to do so.
Events like this always make me think about our preparedness. I freaked out after the earthquake on Easter last year and now we have a 45-day supply of food and tons of water. I figure after 45 days, I’m not going to want to camp anymore. The aliens can eat me then.
*I know there were traffic accidents and people had to work really hard to get the power back on. I appreciate that. But there was not widespread death and calamity. It was not a natural disaster.
Bora Bora
Posted by: | CommentsThis future trip is totally inspired by the Kardashians. I don’t mean to be a fan, but E! plays so many reruns on Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons when there is nothing else on TV that I manage to stay caught up on their krazy lives.
You can mock me, but don’t pretend that you can’t name at least half of that family, what with their names being just about everywhere.
Bruce (family patriarch) surprised Kris (family matriarch and momager) with a family trip to Bora Bora to celebrate the 20th Anniversary. It looks amaze.
While we’re on the topic, do you find it all weird that Bruce willingly went along with the “we name our kids in K’s” tradition that Kris started with her ex-husband? Maybe that’s just me. Or a total willingness to make the family work I suppose. I could learn from that.
Other things I learned from the K-fam? Don’t jump in the water wearing $75,000 earrings. Don’t do it. You just might blame your boyfriend who will then because your husband on national TV.
Seriously, can’t you just picture yourself lounging on one of those chairs, reading a book and forgetting about the world? Doing absolutely nothing but marveling at the blue water. Heaven.
Beach
Posted by: | CommentsLet’s talk about the amazing event that transpired this weekend. I taught my pug how to swim. Rather, we did. It was a co-parenting victory.
She’s been so close the past few times we have visited the beach. So this time I just held her belly until she was kicking correctly, and the I let go. I think I was more scared than she was. I didn’t trust my teaching ability. I’ve heard that pugs can just sink like rocks. When the San Diego Pug Rescue came for the house check we weren’t allowed to have an easy-access swimming pool.
The little pug of mine didn’t sink. She swam! She went right to her daddy and then came back to me.

It was euphoric. I felt as though I had given her a life skill. As though she would be set for survival in the case of a tsunami or flood. Like I could rest easy. Perhaps that is a bit of an exaggerated claim, but at the moment I felt like I had just given an indescribable gift.
We celebrated by dancing in the ice cold water. It was joyous.
I think she cheats a little sometimes with her back legs on the sand, but that is OK. Not that I would ever want her to cheat, but it is always scary to let go completely of anything.
Someday she will surrender fully and discover that by letting go she truly allows herself to move forward faster and stronger.
It is a life lesson we all must learn.
As is the whole “not eating sand” thing too. We’re still working on that.
Our chairs were abandoned most of the time, relaxing swapped for time in the sunshine with our enthusiastic puppy. I wish I could capture her joy in a bottle. I would be a rich woman.
That is the problem and victory with joy. It cannot be bottled and it cannot be bought. It is found within, from the rich and the poor, from those far and wide. When you find a joyous person, you just want to be around that forever.
In these pics you can really see the benefits of my Assets swimsuit. I think I saw them on sale at Target this week. You can also see my white skin — I use sunscreen and no self tanner, here’s why.

Life is scattered, like bobby pins in your bathroom drawer, no? Dance backwards in high heels with me. Let's talk clothes and news. I *love* clothes and news.
